Where to find fine quality solid wood furniture? I am looking for a bedroom set. But the stuff I am seeing at the places like Leon's and The Brick are really not very good quality. I would like solid wood furniture, not all veneers.
Does anyone know a great furniture store that sells quality solid wood furniture?
In Southern Ontario only please !!! Melly replied: "Stoney Creek Furniture used to have a nice selection. Your best bet, though, would be to go through the Yellow Pages and ask questions.
If I still lived in southern Ontario, I'd go to Mennonite country or Niagara on the Lake and shop there. As it is, I live North, so our solid oak bedroom furniture was custom built to our specifications by a local carpenter. Not expensive ... doesn't show the dust ... and looks very nice.
Good luck in your search."
saaanen replied: "Melly has a good one. You can also try an unfinished furniture store. All of their stuff is real. If you won't finish it yourself, they will." Why would my solid wood furniture crack? I just purchased a bedroom suite about 4 months ago and discovered today that there are two, long, deep cracks in the bed posts. They were never there before. Why would the wood just crack like that? How do I prevent it from happening again? cammy replied: "Reduce bed pressure during sex."
handsofgold79 replied: "gee sounds like my Raymore n Flannignas bullsh!t furniture! Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"
gobonzzo replied: "More than likely it was made in China and probably the wood was not dried properly before it was milled into the parts for the bed."
justafren replied: "The wood might be dry. I used a product called Lem-O-Oil on my solid oak table. It was recommended by the store that sold it to me. They told me not to use products like Pledge, etc. or even liquid gold. You need to use oil on the wood."
harley MIke replied: "Most bed post are made of solid wood be it pine/oak or maple being the most common.three. Cracking in the bed post coudl be from low quality bedding sets where poor workmanship is manifested. As an example woud be to improperly failed to pre -drill pilot holes for the screws, where the bed rails attach at the bottom of the bed post This could lead to stressing the wood as the screws were machined in and split the post....Another reason cold be form the natural process of the woodl drying out .Possibly, when assembled in the factory, the wood had "checks" at the time of manufacture. In high end furniture this sort of wood is not used but may be so in less expensive furniture..."
Dude replied: "i agree withjobonz , the wood was not completley dry when it was built.most lumber you buy today no matter where it comes from is not completley dried. some just more than others . i would go back to where you purchased it and demand that they make it right."
dawnb replied: "Quality could certainly be an issue but so could the dryness in your home. If your home doesn't have enough moisture wood will stress. It would also help to keep the pieces rubbed down with lemon oil on a regular basis to keep it from drying out. I oil everything including my kitchen cabinets at least twice a month and my house isn't dry. It's just good for the wood."
Leon T replied: "I’ve made and sold thousands of pieces of furniture and cracking is always do to improper drying of the wood and a very dry environment can speed up the cracking. I’ve seen plenty of cracked up American made furniture as well as Chinese imports. It’s the experience of the maker, not the ethnicity of the maker. There are factories in China that are older than America. You can tell if the crack is new or old and just getting bigger by looking in the crack to see if there is stain in the crack or unfinished wood in the crack. Unfinished in crack means a new crack. The bed posts are likely from a subcontractor and likely all the bedposts will be doing the same thing. In my experience you should demand a replacement bed and a guarantee of replacement for at least 6 months. It’s going to do what it’s going to do within 6 months. Almost all mass produced furniture today is import which like everything else in this world can be awful or quite finely crafted." Is there anyway to remove/make less visible fine scratches in solid wood furniture? I bought new furniture then went out an adopted a new kitten. He found his way onto my new coffee table and left behind a noticeable scratch with his nails. I love my kitten, but devastated that the table is damaged already. Anything I can do to the scratch? pcdo_universe replied: "my mum uses shoe polish that is as close to the colour of the wood as possible. just wipe a small amount on then wipe off the excess so the scratch is filled and let it dry"
Brian G replied: "The scratches are probably in the gloss coating. You would have to lightly sand the area of the scratches. Then you'll need to buy some polyurethane and reapply over the sanded area. Becareful there is a glossy and a satan polyurethane You cant mix them or it will bubble. If it's real expensive you can take it to a furniture restorer or a wood worker. I don't think it would cost all that much just to touch it up." How do you remove biro pen off solid wood furniture? Without damaging the wood?

Thanks x Lil'Alien replied: "If the surface is varnished, try toothpaste. Use it directly and without adding any water.
If it's oiled wood and the ink already went into the wood, use fine sand paper or maybe the rough surface of a dish sponge to sand off the spot, then apply the oil you usually use for your furniture." How should I turn my solid wood furniture white? Should I paint, stain, spray, bleach...? (and how) John H replied: "Definitely paint. If it's furniture, would look to spray paint it."
JAN replied: "That would depend on if you want it white with the wood grain showing or solid white with no grain. I think a thinned white stain would work well if you want it whitened but still have the grain show through. You would use a white water base stain and thin with a little water in a small cup to see how it coats. You can always add coats with stain to reach desired whiteness too. I use this method with all wood stains I use. If you want it sold white use a good quality paint. It would be a good idea to primer first unless you use the newer paint with primer in it now already. I always use the latex water base paints and have good luck with those and they clean up nice too. I would use a brush for the small detailed areas and a roller for larger open surfaces."
Susan replied: "I would use thinned paint...just add some water to a base paint. Then lightly sand back the furniture and wipe down with a soft damp cloth. When dry, you're ready to paint on in layers to reach the desired effect. If you want to get a Shabby-Chic look, just rub it down a little in places with a fine grade sandpaper. This will give a vintage and worn appearance that is very popular now! See webpage below for pictures and techniques.
" Are there any good furniture stores in the St. Louis, Missouri area where they sell solid wood furniture? Specifically bookcases, bookshelves, tall bedroom chest of drawers.
Thanks so much, Chris. I've been there. It is great - especially the Calico cat in the basket. I will most likely buy from them, but I was just checking to see if there are any other places. Chris replied: "I was wondering the same thing and I got an answer. I bought some furniture from this place and I highly recommend going here:
